Diaspora Remittances: A Lifeline to Kenya's Economy
Diaspora remittances refer to money transfers made by Kenyans living abroad to family and friends in the country. These remittances have steadily grown over the past two decades, starting from modest contributions in the early 2000s.
In August 2024, According to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Kenya recorded a historic high of USD 427,200.73 Thousand in remittances, up from USD 414,257.64 Thousand in July. This growth highlights the resilience of the Kenyan diaspora and the country’s dependence on global migration for economic development.

2024 Diaspora Remittances
Several factors contribute to this increase, including:
Growing Diaspora Population: More Kenyans have migrated abroad, boosting overall remittance volumes.
Advancements in Money Transfer Technology: Platforms like M-Pesa Global and WorldRemit have made sending money easier and cheaper.
Global Economic Recovery: Economic improvements in host countries have enabled higher remittance flows.
Cultural Obligations: Many Kenyans feel a strong duty to support their families and communities back home.
Remittances positively impact Kenya's economy by improving household financial stability and increasing national foreign exchange reserves. However, challenges remain, such as high transfer costs and the risk of dependency on remittances.
Today, remittances are the country's largest source of foreign exchange, surpassing even traditional revenue streams like tourism, agriculture, and foreign direct investment (FDI). This growth trajectory speaks to both the resilience of the Kenyan diaspora and the country’s dependence on global migration for economic development.
