In 2022, Kenya’s presidential election was framed as a high-stakes showdown between William Ruto and Raila Odinga — two political heavyweights backed by very different voter bases. When the final results were announced, Ruto emerged the winner with 7.1 million votes against Odinga’s 6.9 million, a razor-thin margin of just 234,000 votes. Conventional political wisdom had long held that winning the “vote-rich counties” — regions with more than 450,000 registered voters — was almost a guaranteed path to victory. By that logic, Odinga seemed well-positioned, having secured 13 of the 20 vote-rich counties. Yet, despite dominating these populous strongholds, he still lost the election. So what really happened?
